LEGO Car Weights

Car weight has a large impact on the speed of the car and length of track required.  Cars will typically weigh 2.2 to 2.4 oz. We recommend that you limit the weight of each car to 2.4 oz. A 2.4 oz weight limit will require a 14 foot track. You will need 16 feet of track for a 3 oz limit and 18 feet for a 3.5 oz car limit.  These track lengths assume a car starting height of 29" using our track stand. Different starting heights will require different track lengths.

Pinewood derby tracks are typically 35 to 40 feet or more. If you plan on using a pinewood derby track, you may need to shorten it or raise the starting gate. Or you can use the full track length and the car that travels the farthest in its lane is the heat winner.

Weight can be added to a car by adding lego pieces to the bottom of the frame and by using our lego weights. No piece should extend below the bottom of the axle modules. You can also add metal weight to the car by creating a "pocket" in the car with lego pieces then covering the pocket with more lego pieces.

LEGO Speed Champion car
Brad Barnett discovered that the 1968 and 2015 Mustang LEGO Speed Champion kits (available in many toy stores) make great racers when used with our Wheel Kits. Brad added lights to his car. The wheel wells do not quite fit on our wheels so a few extra lego pieces will be needed to raise the car slightly.

Dan Huffman sent this picture of a car built by Eliot using pieces from a LEGO Speed Champions Dodge Charger kit to make this car. A few extra pieces were added to raise the car to clear the wheels.

My Cub Scout pack had a wonderful time. This was the first year we offered a LEGO Derby alongside our Pinewood Derby, that's one gym, with two different tracks. Each group of kids spent 30 minutes in both activities... John
